In the event of bereavement, it can be all too easy to believe that you are facing the issue alone. At Sarah Rutter Counselling, I am able to offer a confidential and supportive service with the aim of helping you to grieve healthily.
What is Bereavement?
Bereavement is the period when we deal with the loss of a loved one. There is no set time as to how long a period of bereavement should last, and there is no “proper” way to behave in the face of a loss.
However, if you find yourself feeling anger, withdrawal or that your sense of loss has become more permanent than you’d like then it may be that counselling could help you to come to terms with your loss and move on in a healthy way.
For many people, the most powerful feeling after a loss is the wishing that things were different. However, for some people this lasts longer than is healthy and they may become disillusioned with reality; withdrawing from their daily lives and neglecting their family and personal lives.
Of course, many of the symptoms of grief are completely “normal” and for many people the only thing which can help them is time to come to terms with their situation. However, if you are experiencing difficulty in accepting the situation, neglecting yourself or others, or feel that you are unable to cope then counselling may help to put things into perspective for you, allowing you to find a way to move on, respectfully and without forgetting the person you have lost, or feeling as though you have betrayed them.
The aim of bereavement counselling is to enable you to function properly. With over 15 years’ experience, I have been involved in the counselling of many people struggling to cope with their bereavement.
